Research Skills Development For Grade 8 Students

The Library offers a research skills development program for grade 8 students. The purpose of this program is to teach students how to use the library’s catalogue, electronic databases, print and non-print materials enabling them to find the information they need for research assignments. The session lasts for two and a half hours and is conducted in the Library.

The program is divided into two segments. The first is held in the computer lab. Students are instructed on how to search the online public catalogue and are introduced to the Library’s electronic databases, which provide access to thousands of magazines, newspapers, and reference sources.

The second segment includes an orientation to print resources and a hands-on assignment. Students are given the opportunity to put into practice some of the things they have learned and use a number of the resources discussed to find the required information. The assignment, “The Day You Were Born”, allows students to learn about the time period in which they were born, and acquire knowledge about the range of resources found in the Library.
