From Cabaret to Babylon Berlin: The Weimar Republic in History and Popular Culture

Dr. Elizabeth Vlossak

Germany’s Weimar Republic (1918-1933), born in the midst of defeat and revolution, and destroyed at the hands of Hitler and the Nazis, continues to fascinate historians and the general public alike. Weimar was a tumultuous era marked by political violence, economic chaos, social tensions, and cultural transformation. Professor Elizabeth Vlossak, Department of History, will provide a brief history of the Weimar Republic before exploring its portrayal in recent popular fiction, film and television.
